If you’re looking for jaw-dropping views of the Golden Gate Bridge, Battery Spencer is hard to beat. Perched above the Marin Headlands, this historic military outpost offers a sweeping vantage point of the bridge, bay, and city skyline — all from a cliffside just minutes from San Francisco.
As a local photographer, I’ve captured countless sessions here — proposals, couples portraits, even dramatic headshots. Here’s what I’ve learned about making the most of this powerful setting.
📍 Where Is Battery Spencer?
Battery Spencer is located on Conzelman Road in the Marin Headlands, just northwest of the Golden Gate Bridge. You’ll find a small parking turnout that fills up quickly — especially at sunset.

- Nearest Address: Conzelman Rd, Sausalito, CA 94965
- Fog Alert: The view can be completely socked in at times — mornings tend to be clearer in the fall.
⏰ Best Time of Day for Photos
- Golden hour here is legendary. The light sweeps across the bridge and bathes the San Francisco skyline in warmth.
- Mornings can be clear but bright; late afternoon gives you more depth, especially for silhouettes.
- Fog is common — it can add mood or completely obscure the view. Check the fog forecast before heading out.

👗 What to Wear at Battery Spencer
- Avoid greens — they can clash with the earth tones and shadows in the background.
- Neutral tones (beige, rust, black, denim) photograph beautifully here.
- Layers are smart — it gets windy.
- For proposal shoots: avoid heels. The trail is gravel and uneven in spots.
