Looking for the perfect place for your next family photo session in San Francisco? Here are my favorite local spots that combine great lighting, scenic backdrops, and a little local magic. Some of my favorite moments as a photographer come from documenting families against the beautiful backdrops of San Francisco. Whether you’re looking for that iconic Golden Gate Bridge shot or something more tucked away and woodsy, SF has something for every kind of family. Here’s a list of my go-to locations — all tested and loved by the families I’ve photographed over the years.
Crissy Field is one of the most requested locations for family sessions — and for good reason. With wide open grassy fields, a calm beach, and postcard-perfect views of the Golden Gate Bridge, it’s incredibly versatile. Kids can run free, and dogs are welcome too. The light here is magical in the hour before sunset, especially on a clear day. I usually recommend Crissy Field for families who want that classic SF feel with a laid-back vibe.
If your family loves to explore, Lands End is a dream. The trails wind through cypress trees, along cliffs, and past the dramatic ruins of the Sutro Baths. It’s great for older kids and parents who want something that feels a little more adventurous. The ocean views here are incredible — especially on days when the fog lifts just enough to create a dreamy haze.

Baker Beach is a classic, especially for families who love being by the water. You’ll get wide beach shots, rocky textures, and the bridge towering in the background. We usually stay on the south end (less wind and more family-friendly). Bring jackets — the breeze can be chilly even in summer — and be ready for some sandy, joy-filled memories.
Golden Gate Park is full of hidden gems — from quiet meadows and redwood groves to colorful gardens and walking paths. It’s especially great for little kids, with easy access and plenty of space to explore without venturing far. Every season brings something new here, and the filtered light through the trees is stunning for portraits.
The Presidio is another favorite of mine — peaceful, woodsy, and full of charm. It’s ideal for families who want natural textures and golden-hour light. There are also some great lookout points over the bay and bridge, and I know a few quiet spots with swings or logs perfect for relaxed family shots. This is where city and nature blend seamlessly.
If you’re after that quintessential San Francisco postcard look, Alamo Square and the Painted Ladies deliver. The park is great for simple portraits with a colorful backdrop, and nearby streets offer cozy shaded sidewalks for more intimate shots. It’s a great option if you want urban flair without the crowds of downtown.
This location adds a more polished, romantic feel to your family session. The grand columns, reflective pond, and soft light make it ideal for larger families or more formal sessions. It feels both epic and peaceful — especially early in the morning or just before sunset.
No matter the season or setting, the best family photos are the ones where everyone feels comfortable, relaxed, and connected. If you’re not sure which location fits your family best, I’m always happy to chat and help you decide.
