Baker Beach Photoshoot Tips: Best Time, What to Wear & Where to Park

A Local Photographer’s Guide to Baker Beach Photoshoots
Few locations in San Francisco offer the iconic mix of rugged coastline and Golden Gate Bridge views like Baker Beach. As a photographer who’s captured countless portraits here—from surprise proposals to relaxed family sessions—I’ve learned a few tricks to make the most of this breathtaking spot.

📍 Where Is Baker Beach?
Baker Beach sits on the western edge of the Presidio, just below the cliffs of the Golden Gate Bridge. You’ll find it easily by entering Battery Chamberlin Road into your GPS. There’s a small parking lot that fills quickly on weekends, so I recommend arriving early or visiting on weekdays.

⏰ When’s the Best Time for Photos?
Golden hour—an hour before sunset—is absolutely magical here. The light softens, the bridge glows, and you avoid the harsh midday shadows. I also keep an eye on the fog forecast, since San Francisco’s marine layer can dramatically change the vibe. A foggy morning can make for some moody, cinematic shots.

👗 What to Wear to a Baker Beach Shoot
Whether you’re booking a solo session, couples shoot, or family photos, here are a few outfit tips:

  • Neutrals and warm tones look incredible against the sand and coastal greenery.
  • Avoid greens—they can blend into the background in some angles.
  • Layers work well, especially with the breeze off the ocean.
  • Barefoot on the beach? Absolutely encouraged.

📸 My Favorite Shots to Capture

  • Looking north toward the bridge with your feet in the water
  • Tucked against the bluff with wind-blown hair and soft sunset light
  • Full-length walking shots as the waves roll in
  • Silhouettes if the sun peeks through the fog

You can see some examples on my Family and Couples Portfolio.

🌊 Important Things to Know

  • There are no bathrooms directly on the beach (there are some near the parking lot).
  • The north end of the beach is technically clothing-optional (we stay south).
  • Tides can come in fast—always watch your step near the water line.

Families especially love this beach for its soft sand and wide views.
